Becoming A Member
Membership to the National Honor Society is considered both an honor and a commitment.
For many students, selection as a member of the National Honor Society is the pinnacle of their achievements in high school. This honor, recognized throughout the nation, is both the public recognition of accomplishment and the private commitment to continued excellence on the part of the new member.
Students wishing to become National Honor Society members will be thoroughly evaluated by the Faculty Council.
Academic Eligibility: As the first step in the process, students’ academic records are reviewed to determine those individuals who are scholastically eligible for membership. The eligibility requirement for this chapter is a cumulative weighted GPA of 3.6 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
Candidate Notification: Students who are eligible scholastically will be notified and informed that for further consideration for selection to the chapter, they are to complete a self-evaluation information packet and submit this packet to the Chapter Advisor by the predetermined required date. This packet outlines the candidate's accomplishments in the areas of character, service, and leadership. This packet must include the provided service and leadership certification forms signed by adult individuals who recognize your accomplishments in both areas. Both student and parent signatures are required to ensure completeness and accuracy.
Faculty Council Review, Deliberation, and Vote: All candidate information packets will be reviewed by the Faculty Council, along with any other verifiable information relevant to their candidacy, including possible disabilities for consideration. Deliberation within the Faculty Council will ensure that their decisions are based on accurate and complete understandings of all information presented. The Faculty Council will then vote and those receiving a majority vote will be invited for induction into the National Honor Society.
Notification of Selection: Selected candidates will be notified and informed of their selection and the timing of the induction ceremony. Those not selected by the Faculty Council will also be notified and will be informed as to the reasons behind non-selection.
Verification and Induction: Selected members will be prompted by their notification of selection letter to contact the Chapter Adviser and inform him/her of their acceptance of membership and ability to attend the induction ceremony.
*Eligible students for member consideration exclusively include those students who have been enrolled for a period equivalent to three semesters at Edison Collegiate High School and must be a sophomore, junior, or senior.
Those seeking more information on the selection of members should refer to both the Chapter Bylaws located in the designated page of this website, or the National Honor Society website at www.nhs.com under Article IX of the Official NHS National Constitution. A pdf file of the Constitution is also located on the Chapter Bylaws page of this website.
